The Prediction of Horizontal Soil Fluxes During Wind Erosion Events
J. M. Hopwood
A mathematical model of wind erosion processes was used to
investigate the relationship between horizontal mass fluxes of eroded material on and
friction velocity. The results show the simulated fluxes to be almost proportional to a
power of the friction velocity, with the power being greater(near 3) for the heavier of
the two hypothetical soils used in the model runs. The deviations from a power law were
explained by a transition by some particles from a 'heavy' (saltating) to a 'light'
(suspended) state as the friction velocity increased. A consequence of this effect is that
the rate of change of horizontal flux with respect to friction velocity tends to decrease
as friction velocity increases.
